Agence Future Logo 5.3: Trivandrum

A two and a half day train ride (more than 3000 kilometers) got us to the Southern tip of the Indian sub-continent. The first thing we noticed when we alighted at Thiruvananthapuram (or Trivandrum) was the marked humidity in the air. We rode the three kilometres from the railway station to the adminis trative campus of the Kerala University where our host Dr. P.S. Nair had arranged an air-conditioned room in the university guest house. The 'teaching campus' is 14 kilometres further north. Maya went there first for introductions and a guided tour and later returned for a successful group discussion about the future with students and members of staff of Dr. Nair's 'Demography and Population Research Department',

We also contacted the 'Department for Future Studies' which was conveniently located on the campus where we stayed. The head of department Prof. Dr. V. Nanda Mohan welcomed us warmly and let us use his library. He also arranged for Maya to conduct a seminar on 'Researching concepts of the future. The idea of progress in local discourses'. All participants and Maya in particular, enjoyed the cross cultural interaction offered by seminar. Meanwhile Bram was out and about with his camera both on and off campus and we had a chance to discover the delights of Southern Indian cuisine in the local 'family restaurant'.
