HP Velotechnik optimizes the trike to a vehicle for those who want to travel far with a lot of comfort or have to accommodate a lot flexibly

Friedrichshafen.You know Bike Packing? Now comes Trike Packing: With an offensive in the accessories sector, the recumbent bike manufacturer HP Velotechnik is setting an exclamation mark in terms of functionality and comfort. Slogan: More luggage – everything under control! The Universal Mount for digital handheld devices, the Side Bag Mount as well as the Top Load luggage carrier for high-quality suspension trikes with a large rear wheel significantly expand the spectrum of previous possibilities. The new accessories can be seen at the Eurobike trade fair in Friedrichshafen (4 to 7 September).

The history of the recumbent bike is also one of travelling, in short: 100 kilometres of cycling – but arriving relaxed and having seen everything on the way. Anyone who travels like this does not hesitate to take long trips and wants to accommodate the appropriate amount of luggage. In such cases the extremely stable trikes show their strengths: With the right attachments, they become true pack mules. However, as Managing Director Paul Hollants explains: “There are still far too few accessories on the market that fit easily on special bikes such as those from HP Velotechnik. However, feedback from our customers tells us exactly what they want for even more comfort and functionality. That’s why we’ve now expanded our range of accessories.”

With the Universal Mount, you can attach a wide variety of digital handheld devices such as mobile phones or GPS directly and practically to the typical trike handlebar, a so-called under seat steering. They remain perfectly in the field of vision as well as in a favourable position for the grip.The same applies to the Side Bag Mount:

As in a luxury recliner, all possible smaller parts can be placed close to the handle (see separate press release). Finally, the Top Load luggage carrier provides for the first time a loading option over a full-suspension, smooth-running 26 inch rear wheel, as can be found on the Scorpion fs 26. The usual bicycle baskets fit on this platform, but other – bulky – loads of up to ten kilograms can also ride well sprung. Additional luggage can be stowed as before in additional side panniers, such as the well-known Ortlieb Backrollers.

HP Velotechnik, founded in 1993 by Paul Hollants and Daniel Pulvermüller, manufactures approx. 2,000 recumbents per year in the factory in Kriftel near Frankfurt with 50 employees (including six trainees) and is thus market leader in Europe. The bikes are built individually by hand according to the customers wish and sold in specialist bicycle shops. All signs point to future growth: HP Velotechnik exports more and more bikes and trikes to more distant regions such as Australia, Japan, or South Africa. This successful business strategy was honored in 2017 with the “Hessian Export Prize”, which is jointly awarded by the State of Hesse and the Hessian Chambers of Crafts and Industry and Commerce. Most recently, the recumbent bike manufacturer received an award from the German Social Democratic Party (SPD): The grouping of the Working Group of the Self-employed in the Party presented the “AGS Award for Innovation 2019” for the “innovative mobility” of the bikes.

HP Velotechnik has developed 15 recumbent models that cover the entire range from everyday bikes to racing bikes. All models are available with powerful electric motors on request. Recently, the models from the Scorpion series caused a sensation, winning the renowned “Eurobike Award” design prize three times in a row. Most recently, in 2013 the trike Scorpion fs Enduro and in 2014 the Scorpion plus 20 as a therapy trike. The last time the Scorpion fs 26 S-Pedelec won this award at the world’s most important bicycle trade fair Eurobike was in 2018 as a vehicle in the fast class with pedal assistance up to 45 km/h.

Even as schoolchildren, the company founders Hollants and Pulvermüller became national winners of the JUTEC Youth and Technology competition of the Association of German Engineers – the foundation of the development from a garage laboratory to one of Germany’s most innovative bicycle companies. Since 2006 HP Velotechnik has been awarded as one of the three best bicycle manufacturers in Germany by the industry association VSF several times.
