Photo album - BreakOut! 2001
Close to Lake Konstanz, the BreakOut! festival took place in Friedrichshafen, May 18th - 20th, 2001. It was the first time that the Friedrichshafen fair company organized this festival dedicated to the friends of cycling and outdoor sports. 10.000 visitors had the opportunity to test out the latest developments in this emerging trend sports market.

The bicycle hall was dominated by the impressive amount of recumbents riding on the indoor test track and the first Bodensee (Lake Konstanz) recumbent bike festival. The leading manufacturers exhibited their latest developments in recumbent bike technology. HP Velotechnik had the Speedmachine with the new Aero-bars and red touring Speedbag on display. |
The German HPV club had collected a number of racing recumbents for an exhibition themed "Aerodynamics of human powered vehicles". Fully faired record machines were on display as well as historical vehicles. The state of the art of commercially available machines was shown with a HP Velotechnik Speedmachine with a carbon fiber racing Speedbag. |
Outside of the halls there was a huge dirt test track featuring a series of jumps and tables.
Originally intended for the Mountainbike friends, it was quite a surprise for the public to spot some Street Machine recumbents on the track...

In hall 6 a huge test track with various pavements was available for recumbent newbies. Thanks to the friendly assistance of the local bicycle club, recumbent beginners learned easily how to ride in the new position. They had a choice of more than 20 recumbents and tricycles. |
Editor Daniel Fikuart of the German cycling magazine aktivRadfahren relaxed after the end of the show on a Street Machine Gt. He enjoyed swinging into bends with the bike: "Just like snowboarding", he said enthusiastically. |
Saturday evening was party time at the HPV booth. Food and beer were available. After the public had left the exhibitors themselves now found their time to test ride our recumbents. |
One highlight at the BreakOut! festival was the Wavey Drag race. Some visitors had their first ride on a recumbent directly at the race track. For more pictures see our Dragrace photo album. |
