SPEZI 2006

Saturday afternoon saw what is now a fixture of the SPEZI, tricycle racing around the gravel track to one side of the show halls. Hase and HP Velotechnik had joined forces this year to promote the event: they see it as a powerful way to counteract the still-widespread view among cyclists in Germany that trikes are really just for the disabled.
The track itself was most impressive, with extensive aluminum banking on the corners, tunnels for the racing tikes to shot through, and an impressive start-finish ramp formed from the large trailer which transported the track. As usual riders could choose to take a more direct route over a jump ramp, or go round a chicane instead.
With €2000-worth of prizes on offer this year, there was a strong field of over 60 competitors. The winner after some exiting racing was Bram Goots riding a borrowed Scorpion trike, and he took home the Rohloff hub fist prize. Bram is one of the riders conducting the Agence Future sociological research project (www.agencefuture.org).
